Of the large number of tribes in East Africa, the Maasai is easily one of the most emblematic of East Africa. Known as fierce warriors, this nomadic tribe is actually very friendly and open to visitors. Many of them still live a very traditional lifestyle and are easy to spot by their distinctive clothing.
On this Maasai tour, you can expect to learn about the overall Maasai experience – their religious beliefs, and their culture and lifestyle. You will have the opportunity to enter one of their traditional dwellings and hear them sing and dance (and join in if you wish) and see their famous jumping abilities. This trip also offers the opportunity to buy Maasai crafts directly from the tribe.
The Maasai Experience tour can be easily added to any Tanzania wildlife safari itinerary which includes the Serengeti or Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Families of Maasai live in small traditional bomas strewn about the area. The warriors set out early in the morning with their cattle in search of pasture and water. Young children look after the goats and sheep, and they occasionally help their mothers fetch water and gather firewood. Some Maasai have started keeping camels with the help of Heifer Project International, and have learned about the benefits of this animal.
More day-long camel safaris can be arranged in collaboration with tour operators. Safaris in the direction of Kilimanjaro, Longido Mountain, and Lake Natron can be organized from the Mkuru camp. A tour to Mount Kilimanjaro can be completed in two days, passing through the wildlife corridor between Amboseli National Park and Tarangire and Arusha National Parks. A safari to Longido mountain can be completed in three days, while a safari to Kitumbeine mountain can be completed in four days. A seven-day safari through the mountains of Kitumbeine and Ol Doinyo Lengai to the shores of Lake Natron can be arranged for the most daring.
You can walk through the acacia woodland around the camel camp in Mkuru, guided by Maasai warriors. With their sharp eyes, the warriors notice every movement and will show you many special birds, that live in this semi arid area. If you're lucky, you might even see some game fleeing. If you choose this option, you should bring a pair of binoculars with you.
You can climb Ol Doinyo Landaree, a pyramid-shaped mountain, for a more strenuous tour without the camels. It will take you about two hours to reach the top, escorted by Maasai warriors, from where you will have a beautiful view of Mount Meru and can look out over the Maasai plain between Meru and Kilimanjaro. You can descend the mountain in about an hour and a half and relax at the camel camp. It is very likely that you will be able to combine the various tours.
A visit to Arusha National Park can be combined with a camel safari in Mkuru. An adventurous tour of Mount Meru can be completed in two and a half days. The first day, depart Arusha at noon for an afternoon game drive around the Momela Lakes in Arusha National Park. You stay the night at Momela Lodge and go on a walking safari through the natural forests on Mount Meru's slopes the next morning. In the afternoon, travel to Mkuru camel camp, where you will ride camels the next day before returning to Arusha late in the afternoon via the west side of Mount Meru.
