We have it all on our Marangu day trip: traditions and culture, cuisine, caves, and lots of lively conversation. Bring your cozzie because you might even take a dip in a waterfall or two.
Marangu town, which is tucked away on the lush slopes of majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, is awash in tradition. Don’t worry, you won’t run out of energy because you’ll visit a coffee plantation and get the chance to visit, roast, and make your own coffee. You’ll learn about the Chagga Tribe’s culture and terrifying history (they built those caves for a reason), and you’ll enjoy a brief but delightful hike in the lush green landscape to a sparkling waterfall. Our jam-packed, painfully-full Marangu day trip will give you a buzz that goes beyond just caffeine.
Early in the morning, we’ll depart from Moshi and follow the Kilimanjaro foothills with the rising sun to our right. At 1900 meters, where the Marangu climbing route begins, is where we make our first stop. A strange combination of the serene stillness of the lush Montaigne forest and the anxious anticipation of the climbers about to ascend Kilimanjaro make for an amazing start to the day. We might have to hurry you back into the van before you start climbing the mountain because the mood is starting to catch.
Before we arrive at our second stop, your nose will alert you to it. Marangu is a coffee-growing region, and the beans are harvested, blended, and roasted there. We’ll make a brief stop at a small coffee farm, where you can discover how the inhabitants of this idyllic region cultivate, gather, and prepare their coffee. You’ll even have the opportunity to roast and make your own delicious cup of fresh coffee.
All this culture has probably whetted your appetite, so our next stop is at our favorite little restaurant for a tasty and traditional Chagga lunch, where you’ll be served a hot meal (vegetables catered for!).
After lunch, we’ll head to the Ndoro Waterfalls for some fresh air. We will pass through a lush, green forest on the thirty-minute hike to the waterfall’s base before descending steeply to the rocks. Take a refreshing dip in the pool itself or enjoy the sparkling waters cascading down the falls from the rockside.
We’ll give you a comfortable seat as we leisurely drive back to Moshi, and while there’s always something to see as we wind through the villages, foothills, and roads home, we won’t mind if you sneak in a quick nap. You deserve a break because you’ve had so much experience in a short period of time.
