Standing tall at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), Mount Kilimanjaro is not just the highest peak in Africa it’s also the highest mountain in the world that isn’t part of a mountain range.
Kilimanjaro’s majesty earns it a place among the prestigious “Seven Summits” – the highest peaks on each continent.
This dormant volcano, nicknamed “The Roof of Africa” is no longer active, but it’s a dream challenge for many climbers.
Mount Kilimanjaro is located in Tanzania, East Africa in a region that takes the same name – Kilimanjaro. Climbers usually arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and stay in Moshi town or Arusha town before they start the trek.
For the local people in Tanzania, Kilimanjaro is a very special place. They believe it’s the home of their god, and they call it different names.
The Masai people, for example, call it “Oldoinyo Oibor”, which means “White Mountain” in their language. This reflects the snow-capped peak that dominates the mountain’s appearance.
The Chagga people, who live on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, have a more complex view of the mountain. They don’t see it as one single peak, but rather as two separate entities:
Kibo, which means “snow” in their language, refers to the highest peak with its icy cap.
Mawenzi, meaning “broken peak”, refers to the other volcanic peak with a rugged appearance.
Climbing Kilimanjaro isn’t just about reaching the top; it’s also a chance to learn about this amazing mountain and the culture that surrounds it.
One of the coolest things about climbing Kilimanjaro is the amazing change in scenery. Your adventure starts at the foot of the mountain, where it’s warm and green, with lots of rainforests and colorful birds. As you climb higher, the trees get shorter and there are more wildflowers. Even higher up, things get tougher – it’s colder and windier, with special plants that can survive in the thin air. Finally, you reach the top, a high, rocky area that looks almost like the moon!
Kilimanjaro isn’t just one peak – it’s a family of three volcanic giants!
On your Kilimanjaro trek, you’ll conquer Kibo, the youngest and tallest.
The other two peaks have their own stories. Shira, once the highest, suffered a massive collapse long ago. It no longer exists.
Mawenzi, the second oldest, stands strong at 5,149 meters. It is an extinct volcano.
Most Kilimanjaro treks begin in either Arusha or Moshi town, Tanzania. These vibrant towns serve as your launchpad for your adventure. The exact starting point for your trek will depend on the route you choose. Mount Kilimanjaro National Park (KINAPA) offers seven different routes, each with its own unique starting location.
Don’t worry about the details! When you book your Kilimanjaro trek with us, we’ll handle all the transportation arrangements. We’ll get you from Arusha or Moshi to the perfect starting point for your chosen route, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free start to your Kilimanjaro climb.
Treks take 5-9 days, with longer treks boosting your summit chances. Why? Thinner air at higher altitudes! More time lets your body adjust.
The 7- or 8-day Lemosho and Machame routes are your Kilimanjaro champions! These routes offer fantastic acclimatization, giving your body time to adjust to the high altitude. Plus, an easier summit night makes reaching the top a smoother journey. Since reaching the peak is most climbers’ dream, we recommend these routes for the highest chance of Kilimanjaro summit success!
Want epic Kilimanjaro views? Choose the Lemosho Route! This western approach unveils breathtaking panoramas with every step. It’s a climb and a scenic adventure rolled into one.
Want a super unique Kilimanjaro adventure? Choose the crater camp option! Less than 1% of climbers ever get this chance. Our climbers who do it say it’s incredible – a real wilderness experience you won’t forget!
Seeking a quieter Kilimanjaro trek? Look no further than the Rongai route! This path offers a peaceful escape from heavy traffic, allowing you to truly connect with the mountain’s beauty. Be aware: While the Rongai route is less crowded, it might have a lower summit success rate compared to other routes. Let’s chat and find the perfect route for your Kilimanjaro adventure!
There’s no single “best” time to climb Kilimanjaro – it depends on what you prioritize! Here’s a breakdown to help you choose:
Great Weather (Dry & Sunny):
Fewer Crowds:
Snow-Capped Summit Views:
Peaceful Climb:
Bottom Line: While April and November are the wettest, some routes on the north side (Rongai & Northern Circuit) might be drier options during those months. No matter when you choose, be prepared for unpredictable weather changes on the mountain.
EXCELLENTBased on 436 reviewsPeter V2024-08-26Terriffic Tanzania We had the most amazing, interesting and memorable adventure in Tanzania. We had a 12-days adventure meeting tripes, local people in the villages, safari tours, waterfalls and farms. We had Francis Boniphase as our guide during the entire trip. He is very friendly and is curious to learn and give his knowledge to us. We also met the owner of the Nyange (Praise Nyange) who gave us some awesome experiences on his farm.MtEverest2024-08-24Made it with Nyange! My son and I just reached the summit on the 8 day Lemosho climb with the fabulous crew of Nyange. Special shout out to our guide Amnaay and the assistant guide Henry, without whom we would not have succeeded. On summit day, they carried our day packs, kept us at a steady pace (believe me, that is a good thing), when at several points I was ready to give up. We were one of the first ones to get there just in time to watch to most glorious sunrise. Then, they pretty much held on to us on the rapid and harrowing decent. I found Nyange hightly recommened in Stedman's book. It is a small local outfit that supports KPAP. The owner, who was once a porter, even came to say hi to us during our last day in Moshi. There are lots of operators, a couple of them had huge groups of trekkers, and I am sure they all do a fine job, but I chose to go with a local company and I am so glad I did. And, don't let anyone tell you Kilimanjaro is easy. It was very, very hard!Jacob G2024-08-195 Day Tented Lodge Safari - 10/10 Experience Heinrich arranged our trip and it was everything and more than expected. A once in a lifetime experience made better by Nyange. We celebrated my girlfriend’s birthday and they made it so special. They curated a special trip specifically for us, which made it extra special. Could not recommend more. We will be coming back to speak with them when we climb Mt Kilimanjaro! Heinrich provided 10/10 service from the day we spoke to the day we left. Our tour guide Toha was so knowledgeable and made the Safari a great experience. Would 100% recommend him and Nyange Adventures to anyone.Morgan S2024-08-04Nyange Adventures is the best! Nyange Adventures led our group up 9 to the summit and safely down. They attended to very individual's needs. The local organic food was amazing. I highly recommend Nyange Adventures.Callie2024-08-03The trip of a lifetime with Nyange Adventures I cannot recommend Nyange Adventures enough. From the first email to the final descent off the mountain, Nyange Adventures took thoughtful care in ensuring our experience was flawless and fun. Nyange Adventures provided timely and detailed responses to every one of our group’s dozens of emails. They made to sure give us a thorough briefing before we left for the climb, they did a gear check to make sure we were prepared and gave us meaningful pep talks before and during the hike when they felt the group’s nerves running on high. They were extremely responsive when unexpected issues arose and made sure each of us was comfortable and taken care of through medical emergencies, concerns with sleeping arrangements, food allergies and the like. The care the team provided let our group fully immerse ourselves in the experience and be present in every moment. Nyange Adventures was so prepared as a company and prepared us so well that I felt confident from day one we would all successfully summit in good spirits. Oh and the food was delicious, too. They always provided more than enough of the tastiest food and I ate better than I do at home. Shoutout to our crew: Antipas, Mo, Baboon, Navia and Living for an indescribable and making us feel like we have a second family in Tanzania. Our experience was everything because of Nyange Adventures and I can’t wait to be back eventually to try out their spectacular new sustainable accommodations on their farm!Emily A2024-07-29Best safari guides on the savanna! Nyange Adventures provided an excellent safari experience. I saw so many more animals than I expected! The guides were knowledgeable, friendly, and seemed to truly love the game drives. While the guides worked hard to get us into the best viewing positions, our safety and comfort were also priorities.Alisa M2024-07-24Amazing time on this safari adventure We went for a 5 day safari which exceeded our expectations. We saw so many animals, made new friends and enjoyed incredible hospitality. Our guide Joshua was incredibly knowledgable, super pleasant to be with and generous with his time and information. He taught us so much about the wildlife and the country. He answered all our many questions. He is also an expert driver. Our accommodations were luxurious.
